What starting at Neckar Hub really feels like

Most stories about internships start at the end.

They talk about what you learned, how you changed and what you are taking with you after a few months. And it makes sense. Looking back is easier when you already know how the story turned out.

But what about the beginning?

The moment when you walk into a new office, meet a new team and still have no idea what they expect from you. That part gets much less attention, even though it is often the part that comes with most questions.

That was exactly how I felt on my first day at Neckar Hub. I was nervous because everything was new and I did not yet know what the team expected from me. But I was also eager to see what I could do. After spending years learning academically and growing personally, an internship is one of the first moments when what you have learned finally leaves the classroom and becomes real. Suddenly, you are stepping into the professional world, putting what you know to the test and seeing how you respond to situations you could never fully prepare for in advance.

The first days naturally come with a lot to figure out. New systems, tools, routines and ways of working can feel like a lot at once. If there is one piece of advice I would give someone to starting an internship, it is this: ask the question. Do not wait for someone to notice that you are unsure. No one can read your mind. Ask, listen and keep going. For me, confidence is not knowing everything. It is trusting yourself to figure things out.

One of the things that surprised me most at Neckar Hub was how quickly I felt part of the team. I expected that, as an intern, I would first have to observe and slowly earn the chance to contribute. It did not feel like that. From the beginning, people ask what you think, listen when you have an idea and give you room to take initiative. Your opinion matters. And if you are unsure about something, there is always someone you can ask. That makes it much easier to try things, contribute and improve along the way.

I joined Neckar Hub as a Junior Consultant in Marketing, but I quickly realised that the role is much broader than the title might suggest. One day I might be working on content, another I am joining a workshop, trying out a new tool or helping with something I would never have connected to Marketing at first. And that is probably what I enjoy most. You come in expecting to develop in one area, but you end up being exposed to much more, especially in a coworking environment where startups, companies and people with completely different ideas are all working around you.

If I could say something to myself the night before my first day, it would be simple: “Trust what you already know, stay curious about what you do not, and do not be afraid to speak up.”

I think that is also the mindset that fits Neckar Hub best. If you are proactive, curious and genuinely interested in understanding how things work, you will find many opportunities to get involved, try new things and develop beyond what you initially expected from your internship.

The end shows you what you have learned. The beginning shows you what you are willing to become.
